Belief, In The Face Of Experience

Recently, something happened, and it brought to mind (again!) an old conflict that I’ve never fully been able to resolve. So, I thought I’d talk about it here, in case someone comes across it, and can provide some additional insights into it.

I think we all have some beliefs about life – how things are, how they should be, how one should react to and approach life, etc. And the thought that I’m struggling with is this: What happens when your beliefs conflict with what you observe around yourself? Do you change your beliefs and approach to life? More importantly, should you?

What Am I Entitled To?

Have you ever met one of those people who always seem to have unrealistically high expectations from you? Their expectations from you maybe selfish – like for you to always be available at their beck and call to do whatever they ask – or it can be “in your best interest” – the kind of expectations really “driven” parents have for their children’s future.

Well, I know of at least one such person. And I can tell you: sometimes, that person can be a real pain-in-the-ass. Do you wanna know who that person is? Well…it’s me.

Be Aware Of Your Path…

If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.

– Lao Tzu

When I first came across this quote, I thought it was a warning to change one’s path before it was too late, before one ended up at a regrettable destination. I always thought that the quote was only about avoiding negative outcomes.

However, just today, I came across this comment, that totally changed how I look at the quote.

Concept Of A “Country”

What does it mean when we say that a “country” has done or achieved something? Let’s look at a couple of examples:

  • “Country X successfully launched a major space probe.”
  • “An underdog team from country X wins a major sport competition.”
  • “Country X attacks country Y.”

What or whom exactly are we referring to by “country”? Whom should we congratulate on the achievement? Whom can we blame for the war?

Why Old People Are So “Grouchy”…

If you belong to the “younger” generation, at some point, you’ve probably thought how irritating and grouchy old people can be at times. Not to say that all of them are annoying all the time, but sometimes, you can’t help but feel that the oldies exhibit typical “old people” behavior – they grumble a lot, say mean things, try to order those around them, give unsolicited, “useless” advice, etc.

Full Of Themselves…

Many-a-times, we come across people who we think are just so full of themselves – they can only think and talk about themselves, will find ways to segue in to any conversation and make it about them, will disregard what other people are saying, and overall, you just get a feeling that when you are talking to them, they are not really there, and are lost in their own thoughts.

Not to say that such people don’t exist, but I think there are some people who may not necessarily belong to this category, but whose behaviour may cause us to think that they do.Read More »

Just Chance? Or More..?

Have you ever experienced something where seemingly random things “speak” to you in some way that’s very relevant to you at that particular point of time?

To illustrate: I’ve recently been trying to choose between two options, but haven’t been able to decide one way or another because both options have some pros and cons, and I’m not really able to pick one option over the other. So, I’ve been stuck at this point for a few days, going nowhere. Then, I come across this:Read More »

Annoying Or Endearing?

So, recently I came across the video for a new song of a particular female singer. And that made me realize something which I’m going to use to bore you in this post. The realization was: how easy it was for me to go down two wildly different paths based on the exact same input.

A Better World

The world we live in can feel like a rough and tough place sometimes. We are all just trying our best to deal with this life that is given to us. We have our fears, we have our hopes. At any given point of time, it’s difficult to say what is going on inside a person’s head, but you can be sure that a lot is going on.

At times, all one can do is keep hold of all this chaos. And that may well be the greatest thing that person does in her entire life.Read More »

Little White Lies

A friend asks for your opinion on his new hairstyle, or blog, which you don’t like. But you tell him, it’s nice. He asks if you’d go watch a movie with him this weekend, but you’d rather just lie around the house. You tell him, you have relatives coming over.

Why do we tell these little white lies? Probably, the most popular answer would be to spare someone’s feelings. After all, a white lie isn’t doing any harm to anyone, and if it helps avoid hurting someone, then why not? You’ve probably done this, and probably, will again in the future.

I’m no saint; I have done this too. Not that I’m proud of it. But, I have been trying to avoid this as much as possible. And it’s not without reason.
